Why Your Insurance Company Sends a Check So Fast — And Why It Usually Won't Cover Your Hail Repair

After a hailstorm, one of the first things many customers tell me is:
"The insurance company already sent me a check. I guess that's all it costs to fix my hail damaged car?"
Unfortunately, that's almost never how hail repair works.

The First Check Is Just a Hail Starting Point
Insurance companies want to get the claim moving quickly. In many cases, they'll write an initial estimate based on what they can see during a quick inspection or from photos.
The problem?
Hail damage is incredibly difficult to estimate accurately.
Many dents are so small they don't become visible until the vehicle is under professional PDR lighting. Others are hidden by dirt, reflections, body lines, or simply because there are hundreds of dents spread across the vehicle.
We Usually Find Much More Damage
When your vehicle arrives for repair, we inspect every panel under specialized paintless dent repair lights. These lights reveal damage that simply can't be seen during a standard insurance inspection.
It's very common for us to find:
Additional dents that weren't included.
More severely damaged panels than originally estimated.
Moldings, trim pieces, or headliners that need to be removed for proper repairs.
Necessary replacement parts that weren't accounted for.
This is why the first insurance estimate is often thousands of dollars short of the actual repair cost.
That's What Supplements Are For
A supplement is simply an updated estimate sent to your insurance company after additional damage is documented.
This is a normal part of the repair process—not a disagreement or a fight.
We document the missed damage, submit everything to the insurance company, and they issue additional payment for the repairs that were overlooked.
Supplements happen on the vast majority of hail claims.
Don't Spend the Insurance Check
One of the biggest mistakes people make is treating that first insurance check like it's the final settlement.
That money is intended to repair your vehicle—not to represent the total cost of the repair.
Once the repair process begins, additional payments are often issued directly because the original estimate wasn't complete.
Let the Professionals Handle It
At My Dent Shop LLC, we work with insurance companies every day. We know how to properly document hail damage, write accurate supplements, and communicate with adjusters throughout the repair process.
You don't have to argue with your insurance company or try to prove your vehicle has more damage.
That's our job.
We'll inspect your vehicle properly, write the supplement if one is needed, and help make sure your vehicle is repaired the right way while preserving its factory paint whenever possible.
If you've already received an insurance check but haven't repaired your vehicle yet, don't assume that's all your repair is worth. Bring it to My Dent Shop LLC for a professional inspection, and we'll make sure nothing is overlooked.
