Why We Can't Give an Exact Dent Repair Price From Photos

One of the most common questions we get at My Dent Shop is:

"Can you tell me exactly how much this dent will cost to repair?"

The short answer is: not from photos alone.

Photos are an excellent way for us to provide a realistic price range and determine whether paintless dent repair (PDR) is a good option, but there are several important factors that simply cannot be fully evaluated until we see the vehicle in person.

Photos Don't Show Everything

Modern smartphone cameras are incredible, but they still have limitations when it comes to dent assessment.

A dent that appears shallow in a photo may actually be quite deep. A dent that looks smooth may contain sharp impacts, stretched metal, or hidden damage that isn't visible from certain angles.

Lighting, reflections, camera angles, shadows, and even the color of the vehicle can dramatically change how a dent appears in a photograph.

Because of this, photos are best used to establish a realistic repair range rather than a guaranteed final price.

Depth Matters More Than Size

Many people assume pricing is based solely on the size of a dent.

While size is certainly a factor, depth often plays an even bigger role.

For example, a shallow six-inch dent may be easier to repair than a sharp two-inch dent. Sharp dents require more precision, more time, and often involve greater risk due to the amount of stress placed on the metal.

Unfortunately, depth is one of the hardest things to accurately determine from photographs.

Access Is Everything

One of the biggest factors in paintless dent repair is access.

In order to repair a dent properly, we often need to reach the backside of the damaged panel with specialized tools.

What photos don't reveal is what exists behind that panel.

There may be:

• Braces

• Reinforcements

• Crash structures

• Wiring harnesses

• Sound deadening material

• Window mechanisms

• Double-wall construction

Some dents that appear simple in photos may require significant disassembly to access properly. Others may be surprisingly easy once we inspect the vehicle.

Access plays a major role in repair difficulty and overall cost.

Body Lines and Edges Increase Difficulty

A dent located in the middle of a flat panel is generally easier to repair than one that crosses a body line.

Body lines are intentionally designed contours in the vehicle that create strength and visual styling. Restoring these lines requires additional precision and skill.

Similarly, dents near panel edges, wheel openings, or tight corners often take more time than dents in open areas.

Photos don't always clearly show these challenges.

Aluminum Repairs Are Different

Not all vehicle panels are made from the same material.

Many modern vehicles use aluminum for hoods, doors, fenders, and liftgates.

Aluminum behaves differently than steel and generally requires more time and effort to repair because it has less "memory" than steel. Once damaged, it doesn't naturally want to return to its original shape as easily.

While we can often identify aluminum panels from photos or vehicle information, we still need to inspect the damage in person before confirming repair difficulty.

Every Appointment Begins With an Inspection

When you schedule a repair appointment with My Dent Shop, the first thing we do is inspect the damage in person.

At that point, we can evaluate:

• Actual dent size and depth

• Access behind the panel

• Metal type

• Sharpness and stretching

• Paint condition

• Any factors hidden by photos

Once we've completed that inspection, we can confirm the final price before any repair work begins.

There are no surprises and no obligation to proceed if the repair isn't what you expected.
